Arkansas held its annual spring game Saturday in Razorback Stadium, and it was the first look at new QB transfer Ben Hicks.

The Hogs offense struggled at times to move the ball against the defense, but that’s been the story of spring practice thus far. John Chavis’ unit has been well ahead of the offense, and that showed again Saturday.

Still, the offense showed some flashes with Hicks and early enrollee WR Trey Knox. Along with Knox, freshmen Devin Bush and Shamar Nash showed that Arkansas has a solid foundation to build upon for the future.

Following the Red-White Game, Chad Morris spoke to the media. Below are the more important topics he discussed:

  • What a difference a year makes with both the weather, fans and players for this year’s spring game.
  • Thanked the fans for coming out and thanked the administration for Razorback Fest.
  • “We’ve had a really productive spring, and it’s a much improved team. We’re better in all areas.”
  • “I’m very pleased with where we’re at, but we have a long way to go.”
  • “The goal of spring practice was to get this team ready to go for summer. Summer is then getting them ready to go for fall camp.”
  • “The depth on the D-line and the improvement of our secondary has accelerated us defensively.” Much better in all phases on defense.
  • “Offensively, it took us a few series to settle in, but it was good to see guys  making plays.”
  • The pass from Hicks to Trey Knox was good. It was defended very well. To see the ball in Trey Knox hands is he’s definitely a difference-maker.
  • Devwah Whaley was limited for most of spring, and he played a lot Saturday to get him a good workout. He needed everything he can get during the game.
  • The offense during the spring game was very simple by design.
  • “We’ve come a long way, and we’ve got to get better” on what he would tell fans where the Hogs are right now.
  • “Ben’s (Hicks) leadership and energy throughout the entire football team has really helped the team.” Ben has gained respect from his teammates.
