Auburn has had some outstanding talent come through the program in this century. Here’s a list of the top 10 Tigers recruits as ranked by 247Sports.com since it began tracking them in 2000.

Not surprisingly, three running backs made the list.

1. Byron Cowart

Class: 2015

NFL Draft: N/A

247Sports Rating: .9987

Skinny: This could be the breakout year for the 5-star defensive end, who signed with Auburn as the top player in the country at his position. But Cowart, No. 37 overall on 247Sports.com’s all-time composite rankings, has struggled to see the field in two seasons and recorded just six tackles in each one.

2. Calvin Ashley

Class: 2017

NFL Draft: N/A

247Sports Rating: .9970

Skinny: Ashley was the highest-ranked player in Auburn’s 2017 class, and he’s the second Tiger to crack the list of top 100 recruits.

3. Michael Dyer

Class: 2010

NFL Draft: Undrafted

247Sports Rating: .9960

Skinny: After rushing for more than 1,000 yards in his first two seasons at Auburn, including the 2010 national championship season, the troubled running back transferred, following former OC and current head coach Gus Malzahn to Arkansas State. But Dyer was dismissed following an off-field incident and went to Arkansas Baptist College before finishing his college career at Louisville. According to their Facebook page, the Texas Revolution, a member of Champions Indoor Football, signed Dyer on Jan. 6.

4. Tray Blackmon

Class: 2005

NFL Draft: Undrafted.

247Sports Rating: .9956

Skinny: Blackmon’s story is cautionary tale about unfulfilled potential. The linebacker redshirted as a freshman and then spent three troubled seasons at Auburn. He made more headlines off the field than on it. “Yes, you come out of high school, go to a big college and then to the pros,” Blackmon told the American Stateman in a 2012 interview. “That was the plan. …I wasn’t ready for Auburn or any big school. I was not ready for it socially, coming from a small town in Georgia. I wasn’t ready for all the ways you could get in trouble.”

5. Derrick Brown

Class: 2016

NFL Draft: N/A

247Sports Rating: .9952

Skinny: The top recruit from the state of Georgia, Brown was the biggest player on the Auburn football team when he stepped onto campus at 6-5 and 330 pounds at age 18. He saw action in all 13 games as a true freshman and the defensive lineman recorded 12 tackles.

6. Montravius Adams

Class: 2013

NFL Draft: N/A

247Sports Rating: .9945

Skinny: Finishing a four-year career with 151 total tackles, Adams was a pillar in the Tigers’ defense. He is being projected to be chosen in either the second or third round of the upcoming NFL Draft.

7. Carnell Williams

Class: 2001

NFL Draft: Tampa Bay Buccaneers — First round (2005)

247Sports Rating: .9936

Skinny: After rushing for 3,821 yards and 45 touchdowns at Auburn, and lifting the Tigers to a 13-0 record in 2004, “Cadillac” Williams played six seasons in the NFL, including five with the Bucs and one with the St. Louis Rams. He compiled 4,031 yards and 21 touchdowns.

8. Christian Westerman

Class: 2011

NFL Draft: Cincinnati Bengals — Fifth round (2016)

247Sports Rating: .9928

Skinny: After two seasons at Auburn, the 6-3, 298-pound offensive tackle transferred to Arizona State. The top-rated recruit from the state of Arizona cut his teeth in the college ranks at Auburn and now has a promising career ahead of him in the NFL.

9. Carl Lawson

Class: 2013

NFL Draft: N/A

247Sports Rating: .9897

Skinny: Plagued by injuries at Auburn, Lawson had a breakout season in 2016. Healthy once again, Lawson was among the SEC leaders in sacks (9.0) and tackles for loss (13.5) and opted to leave for this year’s NFL Draft, where he is being projected as a possible first- or second-round pick.

10. Roc Thomas

Class: 2014

NFL Draft: N/A

247Sports Rating: .9890

Skinny: After two seasons at Auburn, Thomas was beset by injuries and became the odd man out in an Auburn backfield with abundant talent. He rushed for 475 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers before transferring at Jacksonville State. He looks to improve on his NFL draft status with a solid senior season in 2017.
