It’s hard to believe, but the first week of fall camp is already over at Auburn. And it’s been an eventful first week considering the fact that Gus Malzahn dismissed leading returning running back Jovon Robinson from the program before the Tigers kicked off fall practices on Wednesday.

Here are five takeaways now that week 1 of fall camp is in the books.

Steele is impressed with ‘rare’ freshmen Davidson and Brown

Auburn’s new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele apparently likes what he has seen from defensive linemen Marlon Davidson and Derrick Brown. As a matter of fact, this is what he told the Montgomery Advertiser about them on Friday:

“I will say this, we’ve got a long way to go and he’s young, but Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson, to have guys like that in the same class is rare. That’s just a fact,” Steele said. “I could tell you otherwise or try to sugarcoat it or try to mask it like, ‘They’re not this, we’ve got a long way,’ but the truth is those guys are pretty talented.”

Davis Jr. has gotten a look at running back

Stephen Davis Jr., the son of former Auburn running back Stephen Davis, got a shot on offense this week after being expected to open the season at safety. The South Carolina native decided to sign with Auburn last month after de-committing from the school during the recruiting season.

Here is what Malzahn told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer about Davis on Thursday:

“He’s a big, athletic guy,” Malzahn said. “We’ve seen him for two days. He was a very good football player, really on both sides of the ball, coming out of high school. He’s still figuring out what’s going on, but he’s a big guy that can run. After we get in pads a little bit, we’ll have a little more information as far as he goes.”

Holsey is ready to compete after a second ACL tear

Joshua Holsey, who suffered his most recent injury to his left knee in Week 2 last season, took reps at the cornerback and nickel positions last week.

“I’m just happy to be out there running around. It’s just, it’s fun,” Holsey told the media on Friday. “Sitting on the sidelines for so long, it gets frustrating. You kind of get down on yourself. You don’t really know if you can still do it.”

Lashlee apparently didn’t think Robinson was AU’s best skill player

Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee made this eye-opening comment to AL.com on Saturday:

“I don’t know if we’ve lost our best skill player,” Lashlee said, referring to Robinson after Auburn’s fourth practice of fall camp. “I want to talk about the guys who are here. That’s a fair question, but I want to talk about the guys that are here and go from there.”

Taylor misses practice for the fourth straight day

Graduate transfer cornerback Marshall Taylor from Miami of Ohio still hasn’t participated in a fall camp practice, according to oanow.com. You can read more about the potential reasons why he hasn’t here.
