Even after a win at Texas A&M on Saturday, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is still on the hot seat, with games against No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama looming.

However, even if the Tigers finish 8-4, with losses against Alabama, Georgia and Clemson — three of the top four teams in the country — ESPN’s Paul Finebaum still thinks Malzahn’s job could be in jeopardy.

On WJOX’s “The Opening Drive” on Monday morning, Finebaum said Malzahn is coaching for his job down the stretch. He added that beating Georgia will be critical, as the Bulldogs have surged past the Tigers since Kirby Smart took over in Athens two years ago:

“Literally, Malzahn’s future is on the line,” he said. “Even though it’s possible he could end up losing to three of the top four teams in the country, it’s still not probably going to be acceptable to Auburn people to be 8-4 and 0-8 over the last four years to Georgia and Alabama.

“Especially Georgia, because that’s the program that was behind Auburn a couple of years ago, and in two years, they not only have caught Auburn… they’re in a national championship and SEC championship race.”

Indeed, it has been tough for Auburn fans to watch as Georgia has become one of the nation’s elite programs while the Tigers have stayed at largely the same level under Malzahn.

Saturday’s game in Auburn will be huge for the embattled coach, and a loss will only make his seat hotter moving forward.
