Late in the 2019 Iron Bowl, Auburn held a 48-45 lead, but faced 4th down and 4 from their own 26-yard line.

Instead of lining up to punt, though, the offense stayed on the field — or so it seemed. However, punter Arryn Siposs was lined up as a receiver and was going to switch positions with Auburn QB Bo Nix before the snap.

Instead, Alabama was flagged for an illegal substitution, as the Tide had 12 men on the field. That sealed the win for the Tigers.

At the NFL Combine this week, Siposs shared his thoughts on the play, saying he was laser-focused on Nix (via AL.com):

“Honestly, the whole time I was literally just looking at Bo because I knew I was changing positions with him, so I wasn’t even worrying about their defense on the field or their special teams on the field,” Siposs said Wednesday at the NFL Combine, where he spoke to the media for the first time since that play. “I was too busy just staring at him, waiting for him to make the call and then go for it. It was bizarre, but hey, we got the win in the end and that’s all that matters.”

Siposs admitted he was fully planning on having to punt on the play:

“It was pretty crazy,” Siposs said, laughing. “I mean, I — to be honest — was expecting to just go out there and kick the ball. So, that was really what the scheme was all about. We certainly didn’t prepare for them to have 12 on the field and, you know, obviously be able to win the game that way. I was fully expecting to go out there and kick the ball as far as possible without anyone kind of being in the backfield. That was the gameplan going into it, but it worked out different circumstances and we were able to win the game, so it was great.”
