If new Auburn head coach Byran Harsin wasn’t already aware of the 24/7/365 nature of the Iron Bowl rivalry, he got an early taste of it in his first press conference as the head coach of the Tigers.

AU formally introduced Harsin as Auburn’s new head football coach Thursday. After Harsin completed his opening statement, the head coach took questions from members of the media via Zoom. His first question was about facing Nick Saban’s Alabama program annually in the Iron Bowl.

“Every single game we play is important. Every single day we practice is important,” Harsin responded. “If it’s not, then when you get in moments like that then they become too big … I understand the rivalry. I understand the Iron Bowl from where I’ve sat in the past.”

As for Saban, Harsin shared his respect and said he looks forward to competing against the Crimson Tide head coach.

“He’s done a tremendous job. Much, much respect from me for what he’s been able to do,” Harsin said.

He continued, “I’ve got nothing other than respect for him and what he’s done. I’m looking forward to competing against him.”

Harsin’s “understanding” of the Iron Bowl rivalry is sure to grow and develop as he adjusts to life on The Plains as the Auburn head coach.
