Auburn is preparing for its trip to Starkville on Saturday to take on Mississippi State (6:30 pm CT, SEC Network). The Tigers will be heavily favored to end a 2-game losing skid and end their regular season at 6-4.

Six or 7 wins, though, won’t be enough for a fanbase expecting much more from the program. Outside of a BCS national championship game appearance to cap the infamous “Kick Six” season of 2013 and a New Year’s 6 bowl appearance in 2017, Gus Malzahn’s program has largely played second fiddle to its more successful rival in Tuscaloosa.

But something else has caught the attention of one of the program’s former players, and it has nothing to do with what is happening on the field. It’s a mood of apathy among its fans, ESPN and SEC Network college football analyst Cole Cubelic noted on “The Paul Finebaum Show” on Friday afternoon.

“That may be the most alarming thing to me this entire season as it pertains to Auburn football,” the former Auburn offensive lineman told Finebaum. “Because it hasn’t been the reaction; it’s been the lack thereof. You’ve done a radio show in Birmingham, Alabama. You know what it’s like when Auburn or Alabama loses multiple games in a season and things don’t go as according to plan.”

Cubelic, a Birmingham sports radio personality himself—he co-hosts the midday program on WJOX-FM—remarked that he hasn’t seen or heard the same level of “frustrated callers” this year commenting on what is being viewed as another disappointing season for Malzahn and the Tigers.

“There haven’t been a ton of people who have called in or tweeted in or texted in and told us how frustrated or how mad or how angry they’ve been about this Auburn season. There seems to be a little bit more acceptance, and that to me is the most alarming thing.”
