One season playing for Gus Malzahn was apparently enough for Asa Martin.

The freshman running back announced he will transfer from the Auburn football program on Saturday. Martin was rated as a four-star prospect during the 2018 recruiting cycle out of Decatur, Ala. He was named 2017 ASWA Alabama Mr. Football and Class 6A running back of the year following his senior season at Austin High School.

Martin signed with Auburn over scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Clemson, among others after rushing for 2,228 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior.

Martin appeared in only five games this season, which means he cannot claim a redshirt following his only season on The Plains. He carried the ball 13 times for 57 yards and caught two passes for 36 yards on the season.

According to a recent AL.com article from Sam Blum, Martin’s family claims the Auburn coaching staff unknowingly burned his redshirt. If you are unaware of the NCAA’s new redshirt rules, players are allowed to appear in up to four games and still count the season as a redshirt year.

According to the Martin family, Auburn coaches informed them of their intent to redshirt Asa. However, the coaches were not aware that Asa had already appeared in five games on the season. Something the Martin family apparently was aware of before Gus Malzahn’s coaching staff.

In Martin’s fifth appearance of the season, the Mississippi State game, he appeared on the field for only two plays.

Martin announced his transfer with the following post on Twitter:

It’s unclear at this time where Martin plans to play football next season.
