There’s no question who Auburn’s starting quarterback will be for the 2021 season. Bo Nix already has two years of experience, and he’ll be looking to take the next step as a junior.

However, it can never hurt to have some competition in camp. And while Nix is the clear starter, there are some other talented quarterbacks on the Tigers’ roster this season, such as redshirt senior Grant Loy, sophomore T.J. Finley and freshman Dematrius Davis.

While speaking to the media on Thursday, Nix explained how having those other quarterbacks performing well can make all of them better moving forward.

“I think having Grant, TJ, Dematrius, having a room full of talented guys, it’s always important because you’re just trying to make yourself better and improve each and every day,” Nix told reporters, including Jordan Hill of the Opelika-Auburn News. “… I think as a group, we’ve all done a good job of challenging each other”

Nix’s first two seasons at Auburn were quite similar. In 2019, he passed for 2,542 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. In 2020, he threw for 2,415 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also had seven rushing touchdowns each year.

Now, the Tigers will have a new offense under head coach Bryan Harsin this season, and Nix is continuing to learn it throughout camp.

“I can tell a great difference from spring to fall as far as how comfortable I am with it,” Nix said. “… Now it’s just muscle memory. It’s doing the same thing over and over and over”

Nix and Auburn open the 2021 season with a home matchup against Akron on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
