While Auburn interim head coach Cadillac Williams has inspired the Tigers since he was named to the position in early November, Williams is just that — the interim head coach.

Because of that, Auburn’s coaching search trudges along, and it has been a hot topic of conversation for the past few weeks in the wake of the firing of Bryan Harsin.

On Tuesday morning, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman joined the “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning” show on WJOX 94.5FM to weigh in on the Tigers’ search and what he thought might happen in the coming days and weeks.

Feldman believes Auburn’s best choice isn’t just coaching in the SEC already, but in the same division as the Tigers.

“I still think it’s going to be Lane Kiffin, you know, at the end of the day,” Feldman said. “He’s the guy that’s their safest option. He’s done a really good job at FAU, and he’s done a very, very good job in the SEC West.”

Feldman also thought that Auburn hiring John Cohen as its new athletic director would help entice Kiffin because Cohen is the same guy who gave Mike Leach a shot as coach when Cohen was the AD at Mississippi State. Feldman thinks the situations are similar, and that it would work between Cohen and Kiffin.

The other name Feldman mentioned for Auburn is another familiar one to SEC fans — and specifically fans in Oxford.

“Beyond Lane, if somehow it doesn’t work out, (former Ole Miss head coach) Hugh Freeze to me is a really good coach,” said Feldman about Freeze, who is current the head coach at Liberty. “If he got that job, I think he’s comfortable with it in the SEC, he knows what it takes to win big in the SEC, and he’s beaten Nick Saban multiple times.”
