Auburn faced unusually high turnover on its staff, having to bring in five new assistants for the 2016 season. The details of the contracts for those new coaches were released Friday.

The most high-profile hire of the group was new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. AL.com reporter James Crepea notes that Steele is the only coach signed beyond Jan. 2018.

Steele will earn $1.1 million in ’16, with slight increases for the ’17 and ’18 seasons. He previously made just over $1 million for his one season as LSU’s defensive coordinator. Steele’s LSU buyout for $500,000 will be split by Auburn and the coach.

If Auburn were to fire Steele, Crepea writes that the school “would owe him the entire remainder of his annual compensation, less any income he would earn during the remainder of the term.”

If Steele leaves for another job, he faces another buyout:

If he were to leave before the end of the 2016 regular season, including the SEC Championship if the Tigers were playing in the game, Steele would owe Auburn $1 million. Leaving after the 2016 regular season but before the end of the 2017 regular season would cost Steele $750,000 and doing so after the 2017 regular season would cost him $500,000.

The next highest paid new Auburn assistant at Auburn is defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff, who will make $500,000 in the ’16 and ’17 seasons.

The agreed pay for the other three assistants are as follows: $420,000 annually for offensive line coach Herb Hand, $350,000 for wide receivers coach Kodi Burns and $225,000 for linebackers coach Travis Williams.

Malzahn recently told a Tiger Trek crowd that these are assistants he hopes to keep in Auburn.
