For the second day in a row, Auburn’s Duke Williams was absent from practice on Saturday. While Friday’s absence was labeled “personal business” according to offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, Gus Malzahn called the situation a discipline issue Saturday:

“He had a discipline issue that we’re taking care of and when he takes care of that, he’ll be back on the field,” Malzahn said. “I’ll make that decision. I will let you know when he’ll be back. Bottom line: nobody is bigger than the team around here and that’s between me and him.”

It’s a disappointing beginning for fall camp especially around a team that many predict can contend for the SEC title and a College Football Playoff berth. For Auburn QB Jeremy Johnson to live up to the preseason hype, he could sure use the talented Williams catching balls down field.

Williams has had issues before; he was suspended for the Outback Bowl last January. When active, he can be a major downfield weapon for Malzahn’s offense – Williams led Auburn with 45 catches for 730 yards and five touchdowns in 2014.
