NFL teams sign and waive players every week, but rarely have both players in corresponding transactions gone to the same school. But as coincidence would have it, that happened with the Washington Redskins on Friday.

Washington signed former Auburn linebacker Cassanova McKinzy, but he took the place of former Auburn center Casey Dunn. The Redskins waived Dunn to clear a spot for McKinzy, who they signed off their practice squad.

McKinzy has been on Washington’s active roster once previously this season, but he didn’t appear in a game. He was waived one day after his promotion to make room for safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who the Redskins acquired at the trade deadline.

Following that move, McKinzy cleared waivers and re-signed with the Washington practice squad. Presumably, Dunn will be added to the same practice squad if he also clears waivers.

McKinzy has spent time with three teams but has yet to play in an NFL game. Washington will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. McKinzy was a three-year starter at Auburn.

Dunn came to Auburn as a graduate transfer and eventually worked his way into a starting role last season. He has played in two games for the Redskins.
