There’s nothing easy about making an NFL roster. Plenty of former college football players who have spent years perfecting their craft at one position find they just can’t make it at the next level.

Former Auburn QB John Franklin III faces an even bigger challenge as he’ll try to make an NFL roster while playing an unfamiliar position. Franklin, who finished his college career playing for Lane Kiffin at FAU, recently earned a roster spot in Chicago for the Bears minicamp as a defensive back and kick returner. A former quarterback and converted wide receiver, Franklin has never played defensive back.

Franklin revealed to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Mark Potash that his first time playing defense came in rookie camp with the Seattle Seahawks. Even though his college experience all comes from playing on the other side of the ball, Franklin still thinks it will help him become an NFL defensive back.

“The defense I pick up real fast because I know what it looks like as a quarterback,” Franklin told Potash. “I know what I’m facing. I know how to stop it. I’m just learning physically to train my body how to stop it. So mentally, I feel like I’m ahead of somebody that just moved over [to defense]. I learned everything from the eyes of the person looking across the field. That’s one of my biggest advantages, and I’m using that. Once I get comfortable physically, I’ll be able to add that piece to it.”
