Auburn has had a 1,000-yard rusher in nine straight seasons, and the Tigers will look to extend that streak again this year.

Who might do it? That’s uncertain. But nearing the start of the season, coach Gus Malzahn is pleased with the multitude of choices that Auburn has in the running game.

“It’s good right now that we have options,” Malzahn told the media after Sunday’s scrimmage. “You can’t have enough depth at running back in this league.”

The Tigers’ top option is junior Kam Martin, who had 773 rushing yards and five touchdowns over his first two seasons and is at the top of the depth chart with less than two weeks until the season opener against Washington on Sept. 1.

Malzahn said that last year, Auburn was selective with what it did with Martin, but that there’s now a “trust factor” between Martin and starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

Another option is freshman Shaun Shivers, who really impressed Malzahn during Sunday’s scrimmage.

“[He] really stood out to me today in the scrimmage, just running hard,” Malzahn told the media. “He’s a fast guy, everybody knows, but he really ran with a purpose today, very impressive.”
