In a span of two days, Gus Malzahn and Nick Saban were asked about UCF claiming its national title following an undefeated Peach Bowl-winning season, and both had very different answers.

On Tuesday, Saban had a pointed response to the question.

“I guess anybody has the prerogative to claim anything,” Saban said. “But self-proclaimed is not the same as actually earning it.”

On Wednesday, Malzahn didn’t want to talk about it, as the Knights beat the Tigers 34-27 in the 2018 Peach Bowl.

“They played extremely well that day,” Malzahn said, via AL.com. “We didn’t play our best, but give those guys credit. They played extremely well and got after us.”

That’s the most coach-speak answer he could have had. Since Malzahn neglected to answer the question, he was asked about it again.

“They played real well that day, and we didn’t play that well.”

UCF’s “national championship” marketing campaign has been complete with a national title banner inside its stadium as well as national championship rings for the players.
