Joey Gatewood was not at Auburn’s practice on Tuesday, according to a report from AL.com, and that has raised some doubts about the backup quarterback’s future on The Plains.

“Auburn QB Joey Gatewood is giving serious thought to transferring and wasn’t at practice today, per sources,” according to a report from Giana Han and Matt Zenitz. “Sounds like a final decision hasn’t been made but sources close to the situation believe there’s a strong possibility Gatewood will opt to leave.”

Gatewood has played in seven games this season, and last week at LSU, he had one carry for two yards. He’s largely registered production as a rusher for the Tigers as Gatewood is just 5-for-7 passing for 54 yards and two touchdowns. He has 29 carries for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

Last week, AL.com published a story on Gatewood’s development, which included a quote from coach Gus Malzahn that he can throw the ball, which was counter to some fans’ opinions. It also included quotes from his quarterback trainer Denny Thompson, who reviewed that Gatewood’s maturity helped him after losing the starting quarterback race to Bo Nix entering this season following a redshirt year.

“The exact quote was like, ‘Coach, I just need you to hear this. I am fine. I am okay. I don’t need y’all worried about me. I’m happy. I’m good And, you know, I just don’t want you guys to worry,’ ” Thompson said.

After the Texas A&M game, Gatewood reportedly complimented Nix as a good leader.

Gatewood was a highly-rated recruit out of Jacksonville, Florida, as he was an Elite 11 finalist, a participant in the Under Armour All-American Game and consensus 4-star prospect. His dual threat talent and 6-foot-5 and 233 pound frame drew some comparisons to former Auburn star Cam Newton.
