Tigers RB Jovon Robinson made sure his presence was felt in Week 9 against the No. 19 Rebels.
Before becoming nationally known last weekend, the Memphis native signed with Auburn in 2012, but after just one week of fall practice, he was determined to be academically ineligible.
So the talented running back took his skills to Georgia Military College where he set three separate junior college records and led his team to the NJCAA championship game in 2013.
In December 2014, the prodigal son returned, transferring from Georgia Military College to Auburn just in time for the 34-31 loss to Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl. And it was all an uphill battle after that.
He initially struggled in the running back competition in 2015, but he did eventually secure his spot as the No. 2 Auburn running back. Sadly, in the season opener against Louisville, Robinson injured his ankle and lost his position in the backfield.
Then the clouds parted, and Robinson took the field against Ole Miss to assist injured RB Peyton Barber. Auburn fell to the Rebels 27-19, but Robinson still shined with 91 yards on 18 carries. And his teammates loved it.
“[The game against Ole Miss] was his first real opportunity to show what he can do,” QB Sean White said. “I thought he played really well. He ran really hard.”
Perhaps if Tigers coach Gus Malzahn had given the ball to Robinson more inside the red zone, the final outcome would have been better for the Tigers.
The rest of the Tigers ground game against Ole Miss was bleak, and Robinson couldn’t get the job done alone, but he did show his potential for the remainder of the season.
He may not have been on anyone’s radar before Week 9, but he’s certainly there now. And it looks like he may become a force for the Tigers in November.
