Kirk Herbstreit will have a front row seat for Bo Nix’s college debut.

Herbstreit, Chris Fowler and Maria Taylor will call the Auburn-Oregon game Saturday night on ABC.

All eyes will be on Nix, as the true freshman leads Auburn’s offense against the Ducks’ defense. Nix enrolled early, went through spring practice and beat out Joey Gatewood during fall camp.

But how will he look when the bright lights of the biggest stage in college football come on? We’re going to find out.

Herbstreit joined SportsCenter Tuesday morning to discuss Nix and the Auburn offense.

“I think the big thing people need to remember is that Gus Malzahn has not called the plays for three years. He’s going back to calling the plays, and I think it really has him excited about his approach.

“Now, he has a true freshman. Bo Nix is a runner and a thrower. You go back to last year with Auburn — Jarrett Stidham was a talented young man and went on to the NFL. He was really more of a thrower first and a little bit of a runner. I feel that when Auburn’s offense is really going, they’ve got a quarterback that’s a true dual-threat. You think of obviously a Cam Newton, Nick Marshall. Some of the guys who’ve been able to run the football. We’re going to find out if Bo Nix — everything I’ve heard is that he can.

“This is a team that ran for about 167 yards per game last year. They need to be over 200 yards. So, look for quarterback run to be more of a part of this offense for Auburn because of Bo Nix’s talents, and I think that opens up Gus Malzahn and his offensive style. And now, you’ll see them really back to being in the groove and what they want to do schematically.”

Herbstreit’s right — when Malzahn’s offense is eating up offensive yards, the base is a dominant running game. The Tigers will have to get back to that in 2019. The best way to settle in a freshman quarterback is to have a great running game. As Herbie mentioned, Nix will certainly play a part in that with his ability to run, too.

Nix signed with Auburn as the nation’s top dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2019.

Auburn and Oregon kickoff Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
