If you missed it, two officiating gaffes benefitted Auburn at the end of its First Round NCAA Tournament appearance against Charleston Friday evening. Following the errors, Auburn won 62-58 over Charleston. While it’s not accurate to say the calls cost Charleston the game, they certainly didn’t help the upset efforts of the Colonial Athletic champion against the Tigers.

One missed call was the foul on Grant Riller’s three-point attempt that could have tied the time in the closing seconds. The attempt resulted in an airball but on replay, his shooting arm was hit before he released the shot.

Something Jay Bilas pointed out after seeing the replay.

Here’s a clip of the shot:

While that call wasn’t terrible, misses like that can happen, the officials did make another mistake that was worse that aided Auburn’s efforts to close out Charleston. When Chuma Okeke came down with a rebound and was intentionally fouled by Charleston in the closing moments of the game, the refs sent Auburn’s Jared Harper to the free-throw line to shoot.

It was a bad error and one that put one of Auburn’s best three-throw shooters on the line instead of Chuma, who is significantly worse from the charity stripe.

The NCAA issued a statement on the call during CBS’s coverage of the tournament on Saturday. In the statement, the NCAA seems to suggest someone should have alerted them they called for the wrong player to shoot the free throws.

“The official called the foul, briefly turned his head towards the scorer’s table and then turned his head back towards the basket where the foul occurred. When he did so, Auburn’s Jared Harper (#1) was holding the ball because Chuma passed it to him just as he grabbed the rebound. The official pointed to Harper, identifying him as the shooter… had any of the officials been aware of this, or had anyone alerted the officiating crew to the fact that the wrong player was at the foul line, the officials would have been able to review the play and determine Chuma should have been the shooter.”
