It’s an exciting Early Signing Period at Auburn, but one news item puts a damper on the day’s festivities.

Brandon Marcello of Auburn Undercover is reporting that Luke Deal, a 2019 tight end signee, has torn his ACL and will have to undergo surgery.

It is becoming more and more popular for players who are enrolling early to arrive on campus and join the team for bowl practices. Deal arrived at Auburn just three days ago. He reportedly landed awkwardly on the turf after catching a pass during one of Auburn’s Music City Bowl practices.

Marcello spoke to Deal’s father who confirmed the injury and surgery.

“Luke will have a great opportunity to show how a young man can deal with adversity and continue to be strong and courage in all that he does,” Chris Deal said.

The 3-star recruit out of Greenwood, S.C., was expected to compete for playing time during spring practices. Rehabbing the ACL after surgery will obviously keep him sidelined.
