Former Auburn DT Nick Fairley may have played his final down in the NFL.

The New Orleans Saints announced Monday that Fairley is being placed on the team’s reserve/non-football injury list (NFI), meaning he will miss the 2017 season. Due to the nature of Fairley’s condition, Josh Katzenstein of The Times-Picayune reports that it may be the end of Fairley’s football career.

The former SEC Defensive Player of the Year (2010) has seen multiple specialists this offseason regarding a heart condition after the team noticed an irregularity in March when he took a physical to sign a new contract. According to Katzenstein, the first specialist, based in Boston, told Fairley he should not play football again. A second specialist in Houston told Fairley he could continue playing without problems. He reportedly saw a third specialists this month. After consulting multiple doctors, the Saints placed him on the NFI.

Fairley, 29, did not take part in organized team activities or minicamp this offseason. Earlier this month, it was reported that teammates normally in contact with Fairley were unable to reach him.

The Tiger great is coming off his best season in the NFL, in which he registered a career-high 6.5 sacks and played in all 16 regular-season games for the first time in his career. Fairley was a first-round pick (No. 13 overall) by the Detroit Lions in the 2011 NFL Draft, months after Auburn won the BCS championship.
