It appears that Gus Malzahn’s search for an offensive coordinator will carry on.

Reports surfaced early Saturday that South Carolina running backs coach Bobby Bentley had emerged as Malzahn’s top target. Bentley has served as an analyst at Auburn for the 2015 and ’15 seasons before following Will Muschamp to Columbia. That report mentioned that Malzahn wanted a decision by Monday at the latest.

A Saturday evening report by Brandon Marcello of 247Sports says Bentley’s decision is likely to be his staying at South Carolina. Bentley’s son Jake is the team’s starting quarterback and has not yet announced his decision on whether to return for his senior season or enter the NFL Draft. The report notes that one of Bentley’s other sons is on the Gamecocks strength staff.

Chip Lindsey held the offensive coordinator position for 2017 and ’18. In what appeared to be a mutual parting of ways, Lindsey left to join Les Miles at Kansas (at a significant pay cut).

Malzahn had reportedly also reached out to former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze who was introduced as the head coach at Liberty on Friday.
