Auburn faces a daunting task down the stretch while playing its top two rivals to close the regular season.

The Tigers also still have a chance to make the College Football Playoff if they land wins over Georgia this week and Alabama in two weeks. Though they have two losses, the Tigers would have a strong argument if they can pull off wins over the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide.

SEC Network analysts Greg McElroy, Gene Chizik and Marcus Spears weighed in on the possibility during a recent segment with Dari Nowkhah.

“We have precedence for this, last year was the exact same scenario,” McElroy said. “Penn State was a two-loss Big Ten champion with a win over a one-loss Ohio State team, and who got in? Ohio State. The same could be said in that particular case in Alabama. Alabama would be the team that might get in over Auburn. So I see it being very difficult. If Alabama beats Mississippi State this week, and even Auburn if beats them and gets to the SEC Championship Game, you can’t rule out the Crimson Tide. So I think with the precedent they set last year, it’s hard to envision a two-loss Auburn getting in, in that situation.”

Spears asked why one-loss teams TCU and Oklahoma are ranked below fellow one-loss Clemson.

“Why is that one loss not looked at as the same as Clemson losing to Syracuse,” Spears said. “Why isn’t Oklahoma number four, they have the better loss per se, because Iowa State then went and beat TCU. The committee, there is no formula. … Nothing is important to the committee until it happens.”
