The man who started the fire at Toomer’s Corner last season will be getting reimbursed after he overpaid his restitution and court costs.

A judge ruled this week that Jochen Wiest is owed $3,887 after he originally paid a total of $26,657 via cashier’s check, according to AL.com’s James Crepea. Wiest had been ordered to pay $20,807 in restitution to Auburn University, plus a $1,000 fine as well as court costs.

Wiest set fire to the Magnolia Avenue tree in the hours after Auburn defeated LSU in September. In February, Auburn University decided to replace both trees. The trees had previously been replaced in 2015 after being poisoned by Harvey Updyke in 2011.

Crepea asked Auburn professor of horticulture Dr. Gary Keever for an update on the Toomer’s oaks.

“The trees have fully leafed out, the canopies are relatively full, both trees have good shoot extension, considering how short of time it has been since transplanting,” Keever told Crepea. “They are being monitored almost daily for soil moisture content and thus far, we have not observed any signs of drought stress, but we also have not entered the hottest periods of the year yet. We’ll continue to monitor the trees through the summer and fall and beyond, although the first year following transplanting is the most critical.”

No decision has been made yet on whether officials will allow the new oaks to be rolled this fall.
