It has been less than a month since the national champion for the 2020 college football national champion was crowned, but analysts aren’t shying away from sharing early predictions for the 2021 season.

On Friday’s “College Football Live,” ESPN’s Trevor Matich shared his pick for next season’s Heisman Trophy winner.

“Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei wins the Heisman Trophy,” Matich said. “When Trevor Lawrence missed the Notre Dame game, Uiagalelei threw for over 400 yards against the Irish without enough experience to even know what opportunities he missed. His receivers will be better next year.”

As Matich stated, Uiagalelei impressed going against a Notre Dame unit that finished the year No. 3 in the ACC in passing defense, allowing an average of 230.6 yards per game through the air. A strong Week 1 outing in Charlotte against Georgia could certainly help launch a 2021 Heisman campaign for Uiagalelei.

Georgia was No. 6 in the SEC in passing defense last year, allowing 248.7 yards per game through the air. It will be a new-look Bulldogs secondary in 2021, though, due to the departures to the NFL and the transfer portal. The unit will also have a new coach. Former West Virginia assistant Jahmile Addae will be coaching the secondary after Charlton Warren’s departure. WVU had the nation’s No. 1 passing defense in 2020, allowing just 159.6 yards per game.

Sept. 4 could be a battle of two future Heisman finalists.
