Bernie Shively is best known among Kentucky fans as the university’s longtime athletic director from 1938 until he passed away in 1967. Shively began his tenure at UK as an assistant football coach in the early 1940’s, and served as the interim head coach for the Wildcats in 1945. His team finished that season with dismal 2-8 record, and Shively hired Paul “Bear” Bryant to take over as head coach the following season. He was 65 when he passed away in December of 1967.
