A. D. Kirwan was a University of Kentucky graduate who served as the Wildcats’ head football coach for six seasons from 1938-1944. Kirwan’s teams posted three straight winning seasons from 1939-1941 but never finished better than fifth in the SEC standings. He stepped down as head coach following the 1944 season with an overall record of 24-28-4. Kirwan never coached at another school, and in 1968 he became the seventh President in the history of the University of Kentucky. He stepped down as President in 1969 and passed away in 1971 at the age of 66.
