Henry Worth Thornton played college football at the University of Pennsylvania, then coached Vanderbilt’s football team to a 7-1 record in 1894.

Thornton entered the railroad business after that, becoming the General Superintendent of the Long Island Rail Road and General Manager of the Great Eastern Railway Company Ltd of Great Britain. He became a Major General during World War I.

King George V made him a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Eventually, Sir Henry was inducted in to the Canadian Railway Hall of Fame.
