Homer “Pop” Hazel coached football and basketball at Ole Miss in the late 1920’s, including five seasons as head football coach from 1925-1929. Hazel’s Rebels won at least five games in each of his first four seasons, posting a combined record of 20-16-1 in that time. He had his worst season as a coach in 1929, leading Ole Miss through a 1-6-2 campaign before closing the book on his coaching career. Hazel passed away in 1968 at the age of 72.
A former newspaper reporter who has roamed the southeastern United States for years covering football and eating way too many barbecue ribs, if there is such a thing.
