James DePree spent two seasons as the head football coach at the University of Tennessee, posting back-to-back losing seasons in 1905 and 1906. DePree led the ’05 Volunteers to a 3-5-1 record and led the ’06 squad to an even-worse 1-6-2 finish. His teams were a combined 0-8-2 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association during those two seasons. He also coached the Tennessee baseball team in 1906. DePree passed away in 1972 at the age of 93.
A former newspaper reporter who has roamed the southeastern United States for years covering football and eating way too many barbecue ribs, if there is such a thing.
