Morrison spent six seasons as the head coach at South Carolina. He is one of the few coaches to have never worked as an assistant.
Morrison led the Gamecocks to three postseason games during his tenure. In 1984, he led the Carolina on a nine game win streak and to a No. 2 ranking in the polls. The Gamecocks beat programs like Georgia, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Florida State and Clemson, South Carolina finished that season with 10 wins which would remain a program record until 2011.
He won his 100th game at South Carolina in 1988.
