John McLean coached Missouri for three seasons, getting dismissed in January 1906 following a pay-for-play scandal.

McLean allegedly gave a star fullback $250 out of his own pocket with the understanding that several alumni would help share the cost, but when McLean went to collect, the others refused to pay and snitched on him to the athletic director.

Missouri went 9-17-1 despite paying for a star player and his tenure ended in disgrace and public scandal.

McLean, himself an All-American at Michigan, also won a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the Paris Olympics in 1900.
