Tom Wilson spent the majority of his college coaching career with the Texas A&M Aggies in the 1970’s and 80’s. He served as A&M’s offensive coordinator for four seasons from 1975-1978, then served four seasons as head coach from 1978-1981. Wilson was just 21-19 in 40 games as coach of the Aggies, but was a perfect 2-0 in bowl games. He took over the program in the middle of the ’78 season, leading A&M to a 4-2 record down the stretch and a win in the Hall of Fame Classic over then-No. 19 Iowa State. That team was Wilson’s only team to end a season in the final Associated Press rankings, coming in at No. 19 in the final polls.
Wilson posted two more winning seasons in his final three seasons in College Station, finishing 6-5 in 1979 and 7-4 in 1981. His ’81 squad also won that year’s Independence Bowl, Wilson’s final game as a college head coach. He would be replaced by Jackie Sherrill prior to the start of the 1982 season, but would return to A&M as its offensive coordinator for two more seasons in 1984 and 1985.
