After an 8-1 Saturday for the SEC, Sunday brought a very mixed day of competition that should lead to a pivotal Monday. On the bright side, 8 of the SEC’s 9 squads are still alive heading to Monday. On the down side, it’s win or go home time for 6 teams. Here’s a recap from a wild Sunday.

Tennessee: The Vols are in the Super Regional, although it took a late rally to pull off the regional win. The Vols trailed Georgia Tech 4-3 heading into the 9th inning, put up 6 runs, then watched Tech bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the inning before finishing off a 9-6 win. Jordan Beck had a pair of RBIs, including a lined double to tie the game in the 9th. UT moves on easily, a rarity for the SEC, and will now host Notre Dame.

Texas A&M: It took a late rally here, too, as the Aggies overcame a late deficit to best TCU 15-9 and move on to the Super Regional. TCU led 3-0 heading into the 6th, but then the seesawing began. A&M took a 7-3 lead in the 7th, then watched TCU tie the game. An Aggies run in the 8th gave A&M an 8-7 edge, but TCU answered with a pair. In the 9th, A&M put up 7 runs, with Troy Clauch’s single tying the game. Both of the SEC’s top teams moved on without the benefit of a Monday game. Texas A&M will await the winner of Louisville and Michigan.

Auburn: Weather seems to be the only thing stopping the Tigers, as they hold a 9-0 lead in the 6th inning over UCLA, but the game has been delayed. Starting pitcher Mason Barnett fanned 10 batters in 5 1/3 innings, and Sonny DiChiara and Nate LaRue each have 3 RBIs. Auburn isn’t officially set in the Super Regional, but they’d have to blow the 9-0 lead and lose another game to UCLA, so they’re in about as good of shape as possible.

Georgia: The Bulldogs ended their season with a 6-5 loss to North Carolina. Down 6-2 in the 9th, UGA pulled within a run on a 3-run Chaney Rogers homer, but that was all the firepower the Bulldogs had left. Georgia outhit North Carolina 11-9 but fell short in the only column that matters.

Ole Miss: Perhaps the surprise team of the NCAA Tournament, the Rebels have demonstrated why they earned that last spot in the field, taking down Miami 2-1 in a game that places them in the regional final, with two shots to nab the Super Regional berth. Miami scored a run in the 6th, but Tim Elko’s 2-run blast in the 7th inning ended up being all the offense the Rebels needed. Rebel pitching allowed 3 singles and a double and fanned 14 Miami hitters.

Florida: After losing on Saturday, the Gators stayed alive with a 6-5 victory over Central Michigan and then posted a 7-2 win over Oklahoma, leading to a winner-take-all rematch with the Sooners on Monday. Florida jumped to a 5-0 lead against CMU. The Chippewas tied in the score, but the Gators scored the go-ahead run in the 9th on Ty Evans’ sacrifice fly. CMU didn’t roll over. They loaded the bases in the bottom half, but UF closed it out. Against Oklahoma, the game was tied 2-2 after 6 innings, but Florida’s 4-run 8th inning put away the 7-2 victory. Wyatt Langford had 2 homers in the first game and Jud Fabian added 2 in the second game.

Vanderbilt: After losing their first game to San Diego, Vandy has worked back to a winner-take-all game on Monday. On Sunday, the Vandy Boys Dores took down San Diego 14-4 and followed with an 8-1 victory over Oregon State. Vandy never trailed against USD, with Enrique Bradfield leading the attack with a homer and 4 RBIs. Against Oregon State, a 3-run 2nd inning game the ‘Dores all the help they needed. Starter Devin Futrell pitched 6 shutout innings for the win.

LSU: The Tigers could have wrapped up a Super Regional spot with a win, but after an 8-4 loss to Southern Miss, they’ll play a winner-take-all game on Monday. The game was tied at 4-4 in the 6th, but USM took control late despite Cade Doughty’s homer and 3 RBIs.

Arkansas: Likewise, the Hogs could have nabbed the Super Regional spot, but after a 14-10, 10-inning defeat to Oklahoma State, they’ll fight to Cowboys again Monday. Sunday’s game was wild, with Arkansas fighting from behind to take an 8-7 lead heading into the 9th inning. The Cowboys put up 3 runs in the 9th and Arkansas, down to its last out, tied the game on a 2-run single from Brady Slavens. But then OSU put up 4 runs in the 10th to force a Monday showdown. Allowing 9 walks and 4 homers didn’t do much to help the Hogs.

Monday’s slate

Ole Miss, which beat Arizona on Saturday, faces Arizona again with a chance to earn a Super Regional spot. Florida gets a rubber match with Oklahoma, having lost to the Sooners 9-4 on Saturday and then beating them 7-2 on Sunday.

Vanderbilt has to beat an Oregon State team that they thrashed 8-1 Sunday once again Monday.

LSU gets one more chance to best the Southern Miss team that took them down 8-4 on Sunday.

Arkansas has to regroup against that Oklahoma State team that rode hot bats to a 14-10 win over the Hogs.

Auburn will apparently finish off their game with UCLA.

Predictions

Ole Miss, having surprised so far, will avoid losing twice to Arizona, and will move on to the Super Regional. Auburn will easily finish off their win and advance.

Of the others, we’ll take Arkansas and LSU to win and Florida and Vandy to lose. That would put 6 SEC teams in the Super Regionals.
