March Madness upset: No. 12-seed Richmond stuns No. 5-seed Iowa
A No. 12-seed over a No. 5-seed is one of the most common March Madness upsets. Not many people, however, were expecting Iowa to be a No. 5-seed going down in the first round.
The Hawkeyes, who entered the NCAA Tournament hot off a strong showing in Indianapolis to win the Big Ten Tournament, fell to No. 12-seed Richmond 67-63 in Buffalo. It’s the biggest upset so far of Thursday’s opening round action.
Richmond, which was labeled a “bid stealer” after winning the A-10 Tournament, was led by guard Jacob Gilyard, who had 24 points shooting 8-of-15 from the floor. The Spiders were the better shooting team from the floor (42.1% to 36%) behind the arc (29.4% to 20.7%) and at the line (87.5& to 75%). Iowa won the rebound battle (40-36), but it wasn’t enough for the Hawkeyes on Thursday.
