Terrible news to share out of Austin as former Longhorn great Cedric Benson died recently. He was 36.

According to multiple reports, Benson died after being involved in an Austin motorcycle accident on Saturday. The news of Benson’s passing has been confirmed by Benson’s brother.

During his four seasons in Austin, Benson rushed for an incredible 5,540 yards and 64 touchdowns. For his college career, he had 6,161 total yards from scrimmage and scored 67 touchdowns. Benson finished his career with the second-most rushing yards in Texas history, behind only Ricky Williams, who left Texas as the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher with 6,279 rushing yards (that NCAA record was later broke by Ron Dayne).

After college, Benson was picked by the Chicago Bears with the No. 4 overall selection in the 2005 NFL Draft. He played eight seasons in the NFL, suiting up for the Bears, Bengals and finally the Packers before retiring from the NFL.
