It was a tough Saturday for the Northern Colorado football program and the McCaffrey football family.

The Bears, coached by Ed McCaffrey, lost 40-7 at Montana State, and a fan was injured when offensive coordinator Max McCaffrey, Ed’s son, angrily tossed a broken clipboard into the stands.

What set Max off? An interception thrown by Northern Colorado quarterback Dylan McCaffrey, who is Max’s younger brother.

The man struck by the broken clipboard was believed to be in his 60s. He received medical attention following the incident but no serious injuries were sustained.

As a result of what transpired, Bears athletic director Darren Dunn issued the following statement:

“While Coach Max McCaffrey’s tossing of a souvenir into the stands showed poor judgment, it was clear there was no intent to harm nor was the action fueled by anger. Max is embarrassed by the incident and is working privately to apologize to the fan hit by the errant toss. After visiting with Max and the entire football staff, I am confident we will have no further engagement with fans of our opponents.”

Northern Colorado dropped to 2-3 on the season after the loss and will return to action Saturday at home against Eastern Washington.
