Coming into the season, many fans thought this was the year that Texas would be back in contention for a title.

Instead, heading into Week 13, the Longhorns are 6-4 with losses to LSU, Oklahoma, TCU and Iowa State on their resume. This weekend, they travel to Baylor to face a tough Bears team.

On College GameDay on Saturday morning, analysts David Pollack and Desmond Howard ripped Texas for struggling to win games against teams they should beat easily (via 247Sports):

“Last year Texas beat Oklahoma and last year Texas beat Georgia, and a lot of the talk was about Texas is back,” Pollack said. “You know when Texas is going to be back? When they stop messing around with random opponents they should beat. Sixteen of their last 24 games have been decided by seven points or less.

“Texas will show me they’re back when they starting beating teams they should beat consistently and not flirting around with Kansas and Kansas State. That’s not what Texas should be.”

Howard pointed out that Baylor is down after blowing a lead against Oklahoma last week, but said it’s a huge game for the Longhorns:

“No one is talking about Texas being back except the Longhorns fans,” Howard said. “And they’re being hopeful. That’s what that is all about. I don’t know if Baylor is mentally strong enough to come back. I know it’s Texas, in-state rivalry, I get that. But Baylor has to put last week behind them because Texas knows this is still a huge opportunity for the Longhorns.”

Can Texas stay in the Big 12 title hunt with a win this week? We’ll find out on Saturday evening.
