ESPN’s coverage of the 2020 NFL Draft received notable criticism from fans and fellow media members on social media for frequent references to draftees’ family tragedies right after it was announced they were drafted, the highlight of their athletic careers.

A graphic shown on ABC referencing former Clemson WR Tee Higgins’ mother’s battle with drug addiction was particularly widely criticized on social media. The graphic read:

“Hometown: Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Finalist for Tennessee Mr. Basketball; held offers from Louisville, Auburn and Tennessee

Sister, KeKe, played basketball for Middle Tennessee State

Mom, Camillia, fought drug addiction for 16 years”

On Sunday, an ESPN spokesperson told the Washington Post that the graphic should not have aired and offered and apology.

“It was a mistake and we apologize for it,” ESPN vice president of production Seth Markman told The Post. “We want our draft coverage to personalize players and, where appropriate, acknowledge the obstacles they’ve had to overcome on their journey to the NFL. This graphic lacked proper context.”

Higgins, who is now teammates with Joe Burrow after being picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in Round 2, had already addressed the matter on social media before ESPN’s statement. He brushed it off saying he’s proud of his mother for overcoming addiction.
