According to multiple reports, Colorado head coach Mel Tucker is set to become Michigan State’s next head coach. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman had it first.

Tucker, one of several, turned down the Spartans head coaching job initially; however, Michigan State came back to Tucker following Luke Fickell also turning the job down. Michigan State brought more resources to the table for Tucker, and he simply couldn’t walk away. Tucker will leave Colorado after just one season as the head coach where he finished 5-7.

Tucker, 48 years old, replaces Mark Dantonio as the Spartans all-winningest head coach. Dantonio went 114-57 during his tenure, notching one College Football Playoff appearance and three Big Ten Championships. However, the Spartans former recruiting director Curtis Blackwell alleges that Dantonio committed multiple NCAA violations during his tenure.

Michigan State’s new head coach played his college ball in the Big Ten at Wisconsin and began his coaching career with the Spartans as a graduate assistant from 1997-98. Along with multiple NFL stops during his long career, Tucker coached in the SEC at three different programs — LSU (2000), Alabama (2015) and Georgia (2016-18). He most recently left Georgia to take the Colorado head coaching vacancy following the 2018 season.
