Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is one of the most popular figures in college athletics, and an incident Tuesday night has everyone talking.

The Blue Devils head coach ran across the court in a fit of rage targeted at Duke’s student section. Fans were chanting at Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel, who used to play and coach at Duke, during the game, “Jeff Capel, sit with us.” This chant is apparently a fixture at Duke’s home games involving former Blue Devils players.

Krzyzewski was yelling at the student section, “He’s one of us,” after apparently misunderstanding the chant.

Krzyzewski apologized after the game, saying he thought it was something personal.

“I thought it was something personal,” Krzyzewski told reporters after the game. “I apologize to the students for that. I don’t apologize for the timing. You shouldn’t say that in the middle of the first half of an ACC game. This isn’t some cutesy little thing where we can just bounce a ball around and giggle. We’ve got to fight. We’ve got to have people that are adamant about it. Once I heard his name, again I’m not going to go say, ‘will you please tell me exactly what you’re doing.’ So it’s a mistake on my part. I’d rather make the mistake in protection of my guy. Then I went at the end of the half and said, ‘look, he’s our guy.’ So I apologize. But let’s think of a different cheer…You leave the other guy alone.”

Duke beat Pitt 79-67, and Capel said he was oblivious to the incident that happened at the end of the first half.
