Navy announces decision on Ken Niumatalolo's future following loss to Army
Ken Niumatalolo’s tenure has come to an end as Navy’s football coach.
Navy has announced that Niumatalolo will not return for the 2023 season. Defensive coordinator Brian Newberry has been named head coach on an interim basis, reported Rocco DiSangro of FOX Baltimore. Army beat Navy 20-17 in overtime on Saturday in Philadelphia.
Niumatalolo had a 109-83 record in 16 years at Navy, but recent seasons have had struggles.
The last 3 seasons, though, have been rough sailing for the Mids. Navy wrapped up a third straight losing season under Niumatalolo, and the Mids have lost 4 of the last 7 games against the Black Knights. The Commander-In-Chief Trophy awarded to the winner of the three games played among Army, Navy and Air Force hasn’t been in Annapolis since 2019.
The last 3 seasons have been 4-8, 4-8 and 3-7.
In a statement, the Navy thanked Niumatalolo for his 25 years of service to the Academy, and noted how the football program flourished for many years under his leadership.
