Pac-12 QB quits team after losing starting job to ex-UGA QB
Another day and more quarterback drama in college football.
On Friday, it was announced that former Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason had won the Washington Huskies starting job. Eason, who sat out the 2018 season due to NCAA transfer rules, beat out three other quarterbacks during fall camp, including Jake Haener. Haener was Eason’s top competition for the starting job, as he was the backup in 2018.
Washington head coach Chris Petersen said two quarterbacks — Eason and Haener — would both play in the first game, despite Eason being named the starter.
“Jake Haener and Jacob Eason … obviously two really good quarterbacks,” Petersen said. “It was a tight competition, and you take it as long as you can and you’ve got to make a decision and roll with it. Jake Haener will play in that first game. He should, he deserves it and he will.”
Well, Haener decided he didn’t want to stick around any longer, and Washington announced Saturday that Haener has left the program “effective immediately.”
Haener completed 9-of-13 passes for 107 yards with one touchdown and one interception in four games last season backing up then-starter Jake Browning.
Washington opens the season Saturday, August 31 against Eastern Washington.
