Tulane has relocated its football program to Birmingham, Ala., following the landfall of Hurricane Ida over the weekend. And it appears it could be a while before the Green Wave return to New Orleans.

Tulane’s season opener against Oklahoma will still take place Saturday at noon ET, but it will now be hosted by the Sooners in Norman, Okla., which was announced by the school on Monday.

“We have moved all Tulane athletic department operations to Birmingham, Alabama, including our student-athletes, and we will remain in Birmingham until it is safe to return to New Orleans,” Tulane director of athletics Troy Dannen said in a statement.

It’s possible that it won’t be the only one of the Green Wave’s upcoming games to be relocated.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported that Tulane will be making decisions regarding future games “in the upcoming days,” and that if it can’t return to New Orleans, then it will likely host games at Legion Field in Birmingham. That stadium most recently served as the home to UAB, and it also hosted the Birmingham Bowl from 2006-20.

After Saturday’s game against Oklahoma, Tulane was also scheduled to have home matchups against Morgan State (Sept. 11) and UAB (Sept. 25) later in the month.

Tulane isn’t the only football team that has been impacted by Hurricane Ida, as LSU relocated to Houston ahead of its season opener at UCLA and the NFL’s New Orleans Saints have temporarily moved to Dallas.
