With the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select … Trevor Lawrence, quarterback out of Clemson.

That’s what many people are expecting to hear when the moment comes on April 29. The Jets are 0-7 and appear to be heading toward having the worst record in the NFL. Lawrence is the top prospect in the 2021 draft class, and he’s having a third straight impressive season at Clemson.

But not so fast. Lawrence isn’t quite ready to commit to declaring for the draft at the end of the year, which is his junior season with the Tigers.

“My mindset has been that I’m going to move on. But who knows? There’s a lot of things that could happen,” Lawrence said on Tuesday, according to ESPN.com.

In three seasons at Clemson, Lawrence has passed for 8,778 yards, 83 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 26 career games. During that stretch, he’s lost only one game — last season’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game against LSU.

However, Lawrence and the Tigers have quickly bounced back from that in 2020. He’s passed for 1,833 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions while leading them to a 6-0 start.

If Lawrence turns pro, he’s likely to be the first player selected, whether the Jets own the pick or not. But if New York has the No. 1 selection, it should be even more of a certainty, considering its recent quarterback woes with Sam Darnold.

But it’s not a certainty at this point, and it will be interesting to see if Lawrence ends up staying to dominate the college ranks for another season.
