Dear Sore Winner: Your words last night after your victory at Tiger Stadium could have been directed at the valiant effort of your team. Instead, you chose to direct them at LSU. Let’s review a little history: Hurricane Matthew was headed to Florida. There was absolutely no doubt about it! LSU being experienced in Hurricanes -- think Katrina in 2005 -- and natural disasters -- a 1000-year flood nearly three months ago -- reached out to UF administration to get the plan. Monday, October 3, LSU offers its plane, its facilities and hospitality to the UF football team and fans. South Carolina had a pretty good experience here in a similar situation last season. Florida’s response: “We got this! Game on!” Tuesday, October 4, LSU restates its offer. Florida’s response, we got this! Game on! Wednesday, October 5, LSU scratches its collective head and restates its offer. Inquiring minds would like to know if there is a contingency plan. Florida’s response remains the same. Thursday, October 6, LSU, man we can still do this, we would love to play here, there, neutral site?? Florida’s athletics department continues the same song. Friday, October 7, LSU, we will play here, we will play there, we will play Saturday, Sunday, or Monday! We will play anywhere! Now our esteemed commissioner steps in and states Florida has decided to cancel the game and he agrees! LSU sighs collectively, “awe man please let us play.” Florida states clearly they are unwilling to change game time, day or location. Our fearless leader, SEC Commissioner Sankey agrees! Then The Storm of the century hits! As the Tampa Bay Times stated in its review of the storm, Florida dodged a bullet with minimal economic impact. Gainesville had a damaged steeple and a turned over lawn chair, and lots of sun. Games went on; Georgia vs. South Carolina, on Sunday, Notre Dame vs. NC State played on a slip and slide, and down the road, Miami played FSU. So, let’s try not to re-write history and make this about a life and death. You have hired a great AD from Mississippi State, Scott Stricklin. Might I suggest he teach a remedial course in sportsmanship over the winter to your coaches and players. Congratulations on the win and best of luck in Atlanta.
