Work gets you so far, and talent gets you so far. Mond is a great competitor. We'll have to wait and see if he is in Burrows's league. Thus far, he's not done one thing to say he is. And then there is the work issue. Like it or not, Mond is not getting in the work that he and his receivers need WITH those receivers. He'd like to and, in normal times, he would be. But these are not normal times.
Not only did they seriously overpay, they also guaranteed too much. Way too much. After a couple of tough wins over mediocre opposition, the conversation shifted to a possible need to extend Sumlin’s contract, because everyone knows you cannot recruit when you have only two years or less on your contract. Really? Everyone knows that? If contracts have to be extended when there’s only two years left, then the effective length of contracts should be the length, less two years. Accordingly, the guarantee should stop two years before the end of the contract. No more life-of-contract guarantees, thank you. I would prefer they overpay to get coaching talent that has real skin in the game than to overpay and get coaching talent that has no skin in the game, and which is unaffected in any serious way by being outscored.
