Gus got let go because his line recruiting was in the toilet and each year he was changing the will and won’t call plays decision so no decent OC would stay. He is a nice man, ran a clean program, took care of his players and hopefully learned his lesson and will be successful.
Speaking as an Auburn guy who didn’t understand our knee jerk contract to Malzhan (and who dreams of being a fired SEC head coach), I never understood Texas A&M pursuing Fisher at that price. It was a not so well kept secret in south Alabama and NW Florida that FSU was a dumpster fire and they were close to firing Fisher for a litany of issues. I like A&M and hope they get this sorted out, I’m just afraid this situation may set them way back.
I don’t think so based on the way he has acted towards his players. Yes, it’s flashy and everyone knows coaches may bring in new players. However, those are people’s kids and their educations and futures are at stake. A little kindness goes a long way. I would love Auburn to win a championship every year, but as an alumni I also value how we help these kids become adults and better their futures. That’s part of why all of us loved the approach Cadillac took. He was only 2-2 but his love for the kids was amazing. I don’t think Prime’s approach would be very welcome at Auburn, or a lot of the SEC schools.
I generally like UT fans and have had pleasant visits to Neyland. Therefore I’m reluctant to point out that escorts versus using your babysitter to be the bag man for recruits is really debate none of us want to get into.
This comment also won’t age well because of another point. The difference in Auburn that outsiders don’t understand. We would not take Carnell “for two years and move on” because he is one of us, not just a coach. If he got the job it would be with the intent to see him succeed long term.
He changed morale and began to heal what was apparently a toxic culture. Can he continue the improvement long term if he is named HC? I don’t know. Neither does anyone else for sure. Remember Bama wanted Rich Rod over Saban. I’m not saying hire Cadillac or don’t, but certainly keep and promote him. I’m just glad it isn’t my decision.
I’d expect no less from the school who stood behind cheating Dan Mullen.
Mr. Sattell repeats a nice narrative. Unfortunately it is more complicated than that. Harsin isn’t bringing in his guys - last year’s recruiting class was below standard and was that way before the controversy. His staff has predominantly not built relationships with the high school coaches and this years recruiting class has great kids but not enough to give any hope. Patience to build requires seeing a foundation. Chizik was let go both for the losses and for losing control of the program - no discipline and a great deal of off the field issues (arrests for violent crimes come to mind) while he was coaching a team loaded with talent and not winning. This base will have patience of their is progress, not when the recruiting is non existent, the coach calls fake punts at his own 20, doesn’t make half time adjustments and our defensive coaching is abysmal. The only bright spot in the program is the grit and determination of these players who are obviously high character and phenomenal men.
Satcheluk: UMass vacated final four appearance as Calipari fled to the NBA. Marcus Camby, his star player, accepted gifts from agents. At Memphis he had 38 wins, including a final four, vacated because they had a fraudulent SAT (taken by someone else) for one player and also paid travel for Derrick Rose’s brother. He left in the midst of it to go to UK. Seems to be a pattern there. Don’t get me wrong, one of my roommates in school was a lifelong UK fan. I love UK basketball and it’s traditions. I’m glad my alma mater, Auburn, is getting that excitement. Calipari’s attitude after losing and his telling a lie about storming the court is an embarrassment to the awesome tradition and fan support of UK.
Short fuse? Dye for over a decade, Bowden to get us through probation and couldn’t win with his own players, Tubberville for a decade, chizik until he went 3-9 and lost by 20+ while losing control of the program and then Gus for 8 years. Same span of time you finished Bo’s career, had a long run with Lloyd Carr, and have had Harbaugh for 7 and if he hadn’t made it this year he would’ve been gone. But do t forget Moeller for 4 years, Hoke for 3 and Rich Rod for 2.
I love A&M and have had great experiences as a visitor there. I was sorry to see you hire Fisher and very sorry to see that extension. Part of the reason he took the job was he made FSU into a dumpster fire both on the field and more so behind the scenes after the championship in 2013. While there were some recruiting issues that NIL will cure, there were a lot of player issues his last several years (think along the lines of Urban at Florida, including Hardin and Aaron Hernandez). He consistently was caught not disciplining and allegedly was interfering with the police as his players went out of control. That’s not a good look for any program and I never want any SEC rival to go there because it gets held against all of us. It’s also the reason FSU didn’t make any counter proposal. Hopefully he learned his lesson, if not I think A&M will have a lower tolerance for it than FSU did.
Think it was the one that ran over UT in Neyland and again at the SEC Championship in the same year.
Athens is a decent town with great restaurants and of course a strip joint in a college town. UGA may beat Bama, but if Kirby built that Bama dynasty explain the success since he left. Kirby ran off Justin Fields to play average qbs and while his teams are good he’s yet to win it all. Of course UGA fans believe it is their right to win despite being the only major SEC program to never win the BCS.
And of course trying to give UGA a 40 yard punt return when the player was kneeling? Or not calling interference when a UGA cornerback held a receiver’s arm down on a 4th and goal pass? SEC refs are universally bad period. For UGA and Bama fans to claim bias is laughable.
During the Auburn/Cam Newton investigation exactly one staff was recorded on audio offering to pay for play. That was a Miss State coach and Mullen was Cam’s position coach at Florida. They never got penalized because they filed a complaint with NCAA alleging Cam was paid.
Sort of like Bama with the videos on the internet of players doing signings at T Town Menswear. Pearl has been clean and was not remotely accused of the conduct Freeze was investigated for at Ole Miss. Keep complaining about Cam but only one team was found by the NCAA to have offered money. It was on tape and yet Mullen is still in the SEC and Miss State didn’t even get a sanction.
This shows the difference in A&M fans and Tide fans (or at least many of them, NCDaveRTR being an exception). A&M fans are some of the best anywhere and a visit to College Station is always a wonderful experience because of their hospitality.
