This was a rare opportunity to send a message about strength of schedule. Alabama has ONE win against a team with a winning record against FBS competition (Texas A&M). Penn State and Wisconsin each played 9 conference games and both have stronger out of conference records than Alabama. In the long run, this will be good for Alabama.
Yes, the Oregon team that lost to Auburn will probably make the CFP if they win out. Expect someone to say that Oregon scored on their first possession and trailed for only 9 seconds of the game (the most important 9 seconds).
The SEC seems dedicated to giving Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany a great retirement party. Putting two teams in the CFP would almost certainly send the $27.5 million Orange Bowl payout to the Big Ten instead of the SEC. The playoff team would get $6 million, so the SEC's net loss is $21.5 million. That may not matter at the top SEC schools, but the bottom half is weak . . . six different SEC teams have lost games against Group of Five teams this year.
Alabama fans are far more important to this decision. An ESPN article about Alabama adding Florida State in 25/26 included this tidbit: "Alabama leads all Power 5 schools with 17 games over the past three years against teams that finished the season ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll." I could only come up with 16 of the 17 games . . ., but in 2016, 2017, and 2018 Alabama had ONE (1) home game each year against a team that finished in the AP Top 25. Alabama season ticket holders deserve better and it looks like they are going to get it!
